We currently lack a comprehensive understanding of nature and distribution of the legacy stores, as well as the timescales over which they influence water quality. Such legacy-associated lag times present unique challenges for contemporary and future watershed management and water quality policies. Legacy stores can build up in various landscape elements, including soils, groundwater, stream and lake sediments and estuaries, and can continue to influence water quality and ecosystem functions over decades and centuries. Human activity over decades of agricultural intensification, resource extraction, and urbanization has led to an accumulation of sediments, nutrients, and contaminant legacies within the landscape.
