Based on previous informal experiments with camera input profiles, deviations in the third (sometimes) or second (always) decimal places of a profile's xyY values are large enough to visibly alter an image's colors.
One practical effect of deviating "too far" from the theoretically correct adapted primaries is that images visibly change color upon alternately assigning the faulty profile and a good profile. The same measure is also calculated using selected RGB working space profiles as "reference" profiles. The profile evaluation tables in Section B of this survey use a very simple measure of the difference between a given RGB working space profile's primaries and Lindbloom's adapted primaries, which is the sum of the absolute difference between the profile's actual red, green, and blue xyY values and Lindbloom's red, green, and blue xyY values. Does the profile have the right black point?.Did the profile maker use the source white point given in the profile specs?.Excepting intentionally different TRCs, such as a linear gamma version of a standard RGB working space, does the profile have the correct tone response curves? Can the profile be used in unbounded mode ICC profile conversions?.How far does the profile deviate from being neutral?.How closely do the profile's red, green and blue primaries match the theoretically correct values?
